Until then

Our words come out,
Unfiltered, rushed, harsh
Like chowder from a soup kitchen slobbered onto a hungry man's tray
Who hastily stuffs a spoonful into his mouth
The morsel that was supposed to soothe
Must first burn the roof of the mouth
Must leave the tongue paralyzed for a minute
Before the sigh of relief
finally arrives.

Our words come out
Provocative, rebuking, heated
Like walking barefoot on sun-baked pavement
There is pain
One winces with every step
Yet you walk...
until the first patch of shade.

Our words come out, they don't
Reticent, furtive, esoteric
Like a clandestine heirloom
locked away in a secret treasure chest
untouched for so long
no one remembers
who hid it there
Or why..

Our conversations, at a sudden halt
Dialogue, to monologue,
Diatribe to soliloquy
Like a power cut, on a thunderstorm night
Abrupt, startling
Making one ebb for the switches instinctively,
Look for candles, torches,
Any flame to ease
sitting in the dark

And just like that,
We're back where we began
Debating scruples, negotiating modicum needs
Adding
Erasing
Carrying
Borrowing
Hoping, one day
love stops feeling
like a sum
we must keep proving.

And until we earn our words,
we exist in silences.

The chair

Aachi's Spot
When I first walked into this house at 16, I had nothing to call my own. Everything in this house belonged either to my betrothed (now husband)'s parents or him. The copper bottom vessels with inscriptions of my nuptial dates were my father's dowry to my in-laws. I had no books, nor toys or keepsakes. His almiraah barely had space for the wooden trunk I'd lugged from the 'teshan', which was filled with two silk sarees packed neatly between a layer of the worn out, dozen cotton sarees, some bangles, and earrings - all heirlooms (or hand me downs) of my Amma. The only "thing" (if you could call it that) which was mine was my morning routine -  waking up at the crack of dawn, pulling out one of the softened loose cotton sarees and replacing that space with one that had just been washed, dried, ironed and folded, prepping breakfast and chai for my parents in law before they woke up, readying the pooja samagri for morning aarti, and when my accha (FIL) was up, oil massaging his legs as he sat in his spot, the sturdy wooden rocking chair, by the living room window, having his tea and reading me parts of the newspaper, between sips. The morning sun spilled into the living room, and lightly onto me from behind his silhouette, as the smell of warm mustard oil filled my lungs.
Years passed, our lives changed, but my morning sessions with accha stayed the same. That is until he passed away peacefully at the age of 87. The morning after we lay him to his final resting place, I found myself mindlessly performing my morning routine like muscle memory and found myself at the heels of the chair, with my little bowl of mustard oil and no leg to massage...!

Now at 70, I look around and wonder how much has changed. The hall is now adorned with pictures of my children and their families, their awards and accolades. Our home is now filled with gadgets working on 'all talking to each other through that intrrnet thing.

"Acchi's in her spot", yells Neha (my 12 yr old granddaughter) outloud to her mom as she brings me my cup, setting it in front of the chair on the windowsill and readies my oil for my morning massage.

Hours before the Open House
I'm running tremendously behind schedule today and it feels like every idiot who has never worked in renovations and interior decoration has tapko-fied directly into my lap. It's me, hi I'm the proverbial khajoor.
"Rakesh bhai, showing 3 baje hai and abhi tak  hall ka painting khatam nahi hua!", I sigh, walking past the living room and entering the bedroom, with my phone screen on the checklist app. The electrician hastily fixes the ceiling fan and drops a dust bunny onto the newly laid out beddings on our staged four-poster bed. "Maqsood bhai, thoda dhyan se, yeh bhade ka hai" I shake my head as I walk out, checking some items off the bedroom and attached bathroom's lists, and adding four more items to each.
"Kab khatam ho ga ye kaam yaar!", I groan, pointing at a new wet spot on the ceiling of the balconette with my bald and slightly bleeding index finger.
As I emerge into the living room, Shera and his badhai tolli are gathered around the grandfather chair, wondering how to carry it out into storage. "Yeh yahi rahega", I bark, "antique hai".  As they step away to finish other errands, I sit down on the chair for a second, to catch my breath. These old havelis are to my clientele like lights to a moth. They're all about the "heritage feels", "correct lighting for their instagram reels", "vaastu", and what not, and I'm not about to let Shera take my honey trap away.
As I absently adjust my hips, the chair creaks, jerking me back to the checklist. It's 2 hrs until showtime!

My hideout
They always do this. They think I will just oblige and do whatever they demand of me. Even bruno gets to choose where he sleeps and he's a dog!

"No playing outside until you eat all of your broccoli"
"No cartoons until dinner"
"Be more like didi"
"Be home by 6pm"
"Be in bed by 8pm!"

And on and on they go, nagging me. I don't have any say in what I eat, who I meet, when I sleep, how I dress up...down to the flipping haircut. I look like a mushroom from super Mario bros! And now they're insisting I come say hi to chachi's family, looking like this gobhi?! No way in hel...i mean heck!

Let them look! I'm going to stay put in my secret spot. You see I've found the perfect place to hide. I got them; made them think I left the house angrily. So they're all out in the society looking for me. Hehehe! This spot too, is so well concealed. You can't see anything hidden or stashed behind this chair, the way it's positioned beside the windowsill and sofa. That's why I always hide my vegetables, especially bhindi, here during dinner. I can make a beeline to the kitchen to trash it once everyone is done with dinner and washing the dishes.

Mumma is back and is pacing around the room calling the security guard! Good, next time she'll think twice before making me look like a bush! Thank god, I stashed my coloring book here, I'll scribble until the coast is clear!

Just another mug

"And this is the last gift", she said, handing over the last of the set of twenty-seven hand-picked, neatly wrapped presents she'd scavenged for my 27th birthday.

"And it's a ..... mug?", I said, a tad disappointedly, after painstakingly unraveling the tape off the golden gift wrapping paper and folding it up neatly so we could reuse the paper again.

"I started to run out of ideas after I hit 24", she said a bit dimly.

"Amma, you could have simply packed the pens individually or even stopped at #10.
She had bought me a bunch of pens because I'd told her that pens, like all basic stationary, were expensive in the States; each costing a dollar at minimum ("That's sixty-eight rupees, bubba!" my dad had shrieked.) That was then, in 2015, when I was pursuing my master's at USC. It had been 5 years to this discovery and this woman was gifting me a set of pens now for my 27th birthday, pens I'd managed to pilfer from my office pantry, because they were...well, free (and the dollar now in mid-80s on the INR conversion).

"But then, it wouldn't have been 27 gifts now, would it?

There was no winning with this woman.
"Thank you!", I said smiling and hugging her, then glancing at the mug. It was the GO-TO Archie's standard, when you ran out of gifting ideas for people or occasions. An archetypal Rakshabandan return-gift, a "mother's/father's day" momento bought using pocket money, a first Valentine's day gift (well, if you started dating in high school), or your daughter's 27th birthday's 27th gift. Archie's had a mug for all occasions and when they didn't, they'd oblige by digitally printing on to their plain mugs, whatever your heart desired and your creativity lacked.

'Happy Birthday,
dearest Daughter',
it read; the D and G working overtime in cursive to hide the lack of artistic influence in the rest of the mug. The body cylindrical, the handle plain, and the text unevenly distributed such that the last bits of the second words almost overlapped with the first letter in both sentences.

I gave her a tired, dejected smile. Not because I hated the mug, I hated the idea of her having spent so much time and effort on things I did not need or might not use. Her toiling in the harsh Mumbai afternoon sun, finding knickknacks I was too old for and did not have the luxury to carry with the stringent TSA luggage weight restrictions.

She saw right through my smile and said, "You hate it all, don't you?

"No ma, I don't hate it. I just... I just think you could have bought something for yourself instead of these things I may not be able to carry back".

That was then, the beginning of what we did not know back then, was going to the world-changing global pandemic of COVID-19. Forget luggage, I wasn't even able to get a flight confirmation to sit still in my inbox, without a subsequent cancellation coming in right at its heals. The wait turned days to months and I fell into step, with my perfectly choreographed hybrid India-US working schedule, done entirely remotely from my childhood home, with my parents over me watching dotingly; cooked meals with fresh cut fruits, laundered tees and bermudas, old movie re-runs, et al.

Those months gave me clarity over a thought I'd held close to my chest. Ever since I had left home at 23 yrs of age, I felt like a person who didn't fit, didn't recognize herself anywhere.

Too foreign to "belong" in the States; a professional Vaulter jumping rental houses or cities every time a lease ended or a contract tenure neared its expiration. Too absent to catch up with things back home in India; as though my parents and friends have moved onto the next best thing and I was stuck on the same verse since 2015. I was always catching up, feeling like I was falling behind or missing out. Like I'd let life happen to me, while people out here were busy living it.

As the years went by, my "Amma, where did you move the sugar jar?" turned into her or dad's, "Baby, you're a guest, you need not wash the dishes!"

Each trip home felt less and less like homecoming and more like..... a vacation. It haunted me that what was once home was now a reprieve, a PTO transacted temporary escape before life took over again.

However, the lockdown months, staying at home, being with my family, I saw that this was the case with everyone. A sort of FOMO about missing one's own life as a consequence of one's choices. My parents had FOMO about missing seeing their only child grow from a hyper dependent, emotional bag of anxiety and tears to a somewhat self reliant woman sustaining herself and doing fairly ok at it, albeit consistently anxious. My friends had FOMO over the events of my life they'd missed, like I'd over theirs. They all had the same tiny pockets of grief I recognized in myself, yet there they were, living & present. And seeing that spirit in them co-exist with the familiar grief was .... weirdly soothing.

It took me embarrassingly long to realize Amma wasn't just buying pens or mugs. She was buying proof that she'd been thinking about me while I wasn't here.

In November, the restrictions lifted and borders reopened. My United flight had not been cancelled for 20-ish days which was a telling sign, a sign that I had to pack my bags. Holiday's over!

Six months ago, on my 27th birthday, I was already mentally mapping excuses to leave the mug behind. Luggage limitations, fragility of porcelain articles, usage, yada yada.
Six months later, as I packed my bags, after having had my morning hot water in it throughout the course of lockdown, I grabbed the cup and carefully bubble wrapped it, stuffing it between my sweaters, without a second thought.

Here at home, what I've now begun calling my rental caves, I've a small cabinet filled with mugs.

Some aesthetic, that I have found over the course of this decade, at Target, Ross, Goodwill, and Home goods; every time I go in to pick up "just that one furniture item" that would complete the living room wall or the Skinny Mixes' Flavored Syrups for my morning coffee and walk out with yet another mug I did not need but "spoke" to me.

Some nostalgic, like the ones I've hand-painted at Color Me Mine with caricatures of my favorite characters from shows like The Office or Parks & Rec, the ones from the Wamart home basics' set I'd inherited from my maasi before she relocated to India, the souvenir ones I've picked up from tasting Glü wines and hot chocolates at Christmas markets.

Some gifted by friends who couldn't bear to see me use yet another cracked, deformed, or stained mug. Mugs with lids so my hot water could stay true to its name and not need a third spin in the microwave. Mugs that they (friends) stake their claims at when they're camping in my living room over the holidays.

At the very back of the cabinet, sits this one. The one I wasn't going to write about when I started thinking of mugs. The one most people write off as just another mug. Little do they know, that a mug picked up so mindlessly at a run down Archie's with its kitschy little calligraphy, is bringing me home wherever I go.

Where the heart is

Home

It would not be (entirely) wrong to say that I've been a "nomad" for the past decade.

Nomad:

Pronunciation: Nōmád

Latin: nomas, meaning roaming . A person having no permanent residence.

Subconsciously as I romanticize or dramaticize (she has a penchant for drama, this one) everyday tidings, I have thought long and hard about home; the concept of it, what does it mean, where is home, where do I truly belong? One may say my birth and childhood home, the place where I spent 2/3rds of my life, where I went from pediatric -> adolescent -> almost adult on paper, is home. And I agreed.

Hence, nomad. I left for the states about 10 years ago, leaving a "permanent" abode and venturing out into the absolute unknown. Maybe not as risqué as shown in "the man vs wild" but not too far off in concept. Ever since, this question has been looming over my head like a hankering hangover.

One of my most frustrating qualities is the strength of my attachment (or detachment). I am attached, deeply, to people, things, ideas, and sentiments. And it comes as no surprise, that this attachment also extends toward my childhood home. I'd like you to imagine that my soul is made up of rays that fill every crack in the home and mind you, it's an oldie - mi casa, so imagine many!

(You're reading a piece I wrote, so go along with it, will you?!)

I've dreamt, envisioned, transported, and wept about and for that place, not once or twice but every time I return. That is for landmarks and reminders of every phase of my being and yet, it has an inate ability to bring me unparalleled comfort.

So I was convinced, that there is nothing that could ever come close. I'd always feel like a nomad after leaving home. Too alien too fleeting to belong anywhere else, too remiss too absent to fit right back where I started... because time is a biyotch and does not wait for anyone (especially, the depressed lost souls) to (mentally) move on.

So I'd say that the 'stary eyed- no worldly experience Noob-quickly turned into a horrified FOB' that stepped into this country would be "shooketh" to learn that the bull was able to put down roots and find a semblance of normalcy (after what seemed like an eternity) in this space.

An unassuming space, a blank canvas that basically said I'll be whatever you need me to be. Saw me and nurtured me through seasons, relations, crises, and opportunities. Gave me reassurance that it'd be my refuge. My space.

Countless moods, celebrations and brawls, chapter after chapter, my constant. A silent spectator, seeing me trying to build my habitat, when I was actually building my constitution.

Every nook, every corner, I've touched, I've felt, I've lived in. I can confidently say that about this space over any place else where I've resided.

Today, as I prepare to bid adieu to this house, I'm plagued with all the memories I've created here and an intense desire to leave more traces of me back....maybe filling in that screw hole in the wall (that the superlatively well endowed yet utterly stingy rental company will charge me for) with a love note to this place and caulk-sealing it shut? Maybe carving my initials under the apartment number plate? Maybe penning my name in some blind spot....but I resist. Because that's not her, this space. Loud oversaid, permanent (irreversible) declarations of possession, na. She was never meant to be owned, to be possessed - only to be held.

If there's one thing she's taught me is to love from afar and let time drive the needful. So instead, I will take her medals on my soul. The little crack in my mind she healed by giving me my own space. The small gash in my heart she sealed by letting me see my loved ones enjoy her warmth. The tiny bend in my spine she straightened as she said stand tall.

I'm sure I'll autopilot back here the next few times that I exit the highway from work (habit, just like one would with the new year date 202⅘), I'm sure my chest will feel a little tighter each time I pass by the adjacent mall, I'm sure I'll tell someone I live here only to correct myself mid sentence..

And just like that, in fleeting flashbacks of the past, she'll always be part of me and me, hers.

Thank you home, for all that you are and have been to

me.

Your grateful daughter.

Depression

It hit me out of nowhere in 2015.
I wish I could add in a simile to explain its unpredictable nature. I wish saying," it hits you like a ramming vehicle in the blindspot of your car's mirrors" or "its hit you like a thunderbolt" could capture the abruptness and the gravitas of the matter. But it doesn't.

Just like being diagnosed with it doesn't capture its essence from an outside perspective. They'll say you should have seen it coming, the move/the break-up/ the change of work/city/environment/fields/months/days/minutes/seconds should have been a blatant indicator. At the risk of sounding just too dense, it's not.

They'll say you have it better than him/her/it/them. They'll say it's temporary. With each passing breathe escaping their vocals, they will make it so diminutive and guilt you into feeling miserable, for being ungrateful for your existence, lifestyle, materials and stature and privilege.

They'll provide hollow unsolicited advice like "feel better" , "be happy" , "don't be sad", "don't be a loser/ wuss", " mingle/ excercise/eat/ breathe/sleep more", "take a vacation" and condition you into believing that what you suffer from is nothing but a made up story, a first-world-problem, if you will.

And just like that, they'll abandon you "She's too weird man, always weeping", "he acting pricey and not responding to my texts/calls", "how long is she going to be a partypooper?", " I've tried, he doesn't want to be helped, so to hell with him!"

Wrapped in sheen, shine and monochrome and packaged with a label of self-care, they will market things to soak your hair, skin, fingers and toes in blatantly displaying that
your crisis is stemming from your physical flaws.

In the end, it'll be as it was before. You. Alone. Solitary. Until you see that the key lies in you. That only you can turn "you against you" to " you for yourself". Whether you have a companion, a drug, a help, or a device...in the end, your war is against yourself and you're your only teammate.
And in the aftermath, there will be no victory calls, no celebrations. There will be no medals and scars to show, no numbers to gloat off of. But there will be a victor, a survivor, a story to tell, a lesson to share. A story that will perhaps help those in the same darkness that once engulfed you. A story that will make u feel that every new battle you face is easier to take on after this feat. So fight it with all your heart, with all your might. Because no one else can or will fight this for you.

Work-Haul

PS: Wrote this back in 2019 and finally unearthed it from a pile of random musings. Here you go.

--------

Everyday I long for the clock to strike five,
I'd get to go home and bid work goodbye.

But I glance at the time and it's only half past ten,
"Oh well", I sigh "the day has just begun".

So I immerse myself in the abysmal world of toil,
Until thoughts of being overlooked start to make my blood boil.

And I read and read but nothing makes sense,
Until I start to wonder, "am I that dense?"

I gulp down a bottle full of water,
In hopes of me being able to author,

Documents and Reports with technical verbiage,
Funny how I got myself stuck into drafting this garbage!

My mind gets flooded with thoughts of being a misfit,
And then I harp on endlessly about wanting to quit!

Tell me, does it make one dead-beat,
for not having the desire to compete,

In a race to reach nowhere,
Where being contentious is a flair.

Where snobbishness is acceptable for experts
And the world gives you a hard time for being an introvert

Where the vertex is an appraisal
And an offense is a reprisal

So I tell myself to show some valor
The world cannot punish you for candor

Until I notice people starting to walk away
It's almost five, maybe another day

Where my heart sings

The rays of sunshine seeping in
through that tiny gap in the curtain
The little birdy by my window sill
And the secrets of the world that it spills
The bananas that I organize by shape
My little reading nook and its rustic blanket cape
Sharavati, akruti, aksinya, and vedyayi
Our morning gapshup as I sip my chai
The *line-in* lady creaking through the chinese speaker
Those hundred cranies where I set my tea cup
Being astounded by your binge watching talent
Or when you relocate spider nests with moves so gallant
Our daily rundown of *What's for lunch, breakfast, and dinner*
And discussing how the overcast makes everything grimmer
Our make shift dynamic work out zones and moods
Followed by feasting to a wonderful spread of your homemade food
This constant feeling of overwhelming gratitude
And your tolerance to my ever changing attitude
My room, my books,
my art, my terrace
my desk, my memories,
my shelves, my space

I will yearn for it incessantly, I will miss it all
But it's you, my darlings.. that I will miss most of all.

Traces

I had a dream, a vivid one. I am standing by my brown almirah back home, the one with all my notes, books, keepsakes, 22 years of memories.

As always, I start going through the pile and pick up books to browse. To an outsider, my actions look random. It's like watching a kid trying out candy from a Christmas assortments' box, I certainly must not know what I'm going to get, right?

Wrong. Because I have a plan. I start with kindergarten calendars (this was our schools version of a planner for every child), making my way up through the grades. Then moving onto junior college, degree college, and grad school. Only this time's different. I've an unwavering focus, like a woman on a mission. I only sort through my school pile.

And you know, I can find traces of you in everything I open.

There's our script for some teacher's day play, not too shabby for a bunch of 12 yr olds. There's our imaginary school with house colors, black, white, grey and gold, and us both taking stabs at creating unconventional uniforms. The usual FLAMES and other cringe stuff. There are stories or essays and both of us competiting at "who can write more BS, faster?", an imaginary game we played but never admitted to, with only two dumbass contestants.

There's our rendition of what we wanted our imaginary boyfriends to look and dress like, all three of them with the same spiked hair because of limited drawing abilities. Guidelines for emcee-ing random language days, pretty confident the teachers were inventing these just to see us embarrass ourselves.

There are your corrections to my spelling and horrid handwriting. Then your quintessential J in signature, the one with the smile face, in a sign. You beeming with joy at creating a signature and thinking it looks so fly, and us looking at you with incredulous expressions.

There's an assortment of sheets that looks like a child hand bound it, immediately recognize it as our scrap book. It still smells of some horrible glue, not joker gum or fevicol, but some really horrible glue. It has these categories and our attempt at scrap booking for those categories. There's also a sayings book, one quote a day type.

Ah, I finally find those slam books. Three. We each had three slams books, talk about extra. And every book has you and vidu, either on the front or back cover. You both have also taken over any blank sheets available to write essays about us and wild declarations, this sheet is reserved by Nirali/ Vidula. I know you'll find the same on yours. Our never ending pride for NirViKsha shining through.

Reading through all those, it feels like it was just yesterday all this happened. It feels like just yesterday we sat down during recess, swapped tiffins per the deal we made, your sandwich dhokla to vidu, vidu's methi paratha to me, my biskoot roti to you. Our moms will be happy today, clean plate club. As we eat, we work on some incredibly stupid idea - another hypothetical school where there would be dance period and no white shorts because who wants a blood stained skirt. Or we'll think of starting another imaginary club like scrap booking that we'll give up midway on. The quiting doesn't bother us, we're too invested in trying as many things as possible. We feel strong. We feel invincible. Even the gibberish physics lectures or torturous algebra periods can't stop this feeling. Because we have each other. And that's enough.

For now, that's where I want to be.

The alarm rings and I'm mad, mad at being jolted into the rude reality. I run my fingers angrily through my hair and today, they smell of the scrap book glue.

Journalling

Isn't this concept basically your 90's dear diary but on crack cocaine? I say on drugs because everyone that so-called journals (used as a verb) these days treats it as if it's an obsession. When someone says they journal, I always imagine this menacing, slightly psychotic twitchy look in their eyes as if they've been journaling constantly, scribbling all their fleeting thoughts rapidly,  foaming at their mouths, but carrying on without food or sleep, chanting "Must. Note. Everything. Down!" Mostly because no one does anything in moderation these days. Everything has to obnoxiously explicit, in your face, grand (go big or go bigger pysche).

To be fair, many a budding and veteran (....journalists(?) what do we call them,  Journaling aficionados, ...journos? Yea let's stick to that) JOURNOS might be journaling in the right amount, a little bit scribbling here and there, and keeping it discrete, as one probably should. But the vast majority of journos decide to come out of the closet and reveal themselves as avid Journos; these are the ones I seriously dispise, almost to the point where I want to hiss at them everytime they do anything remotely journo-esque.

Journalling is basically a physical blog, like a dear diary as I said before for my darling boomers and genx readers (if any). But it can be built to have a little more structure. The vast majority of people who journal show that they use it during the first 5 and last 5 minutes of their day. The former for making lists and latter for showing what was accomplished and showing gratitude. And while it might help some, it just seems like a butt load of bolderdash. It feels like an elaborate ploy by the influencers to show they're oh so organized and methodical, that they release their floating thoughts here so they have more mental space to process the immediate, that their neverending color coded and highlighted to-do lists ensure maximum efficiency, but truth be told it's anything but this. Especially, the gratitude lists. I mean for God's sake, say a thank you out loud.

I got to thinking about this because my physician, who has taken the responsibility (I'm grateful, ignore my tone) of also being my part time therapist, seems to think this might help me manage my thoughts efficiently so I don't take those to bed with me. I chuckled, as she said it and looking at her face, which portrayed a mixture of expressions ranging from aghast to borderline offended, quickly learned that was not a joke, but a genuine suggestion.

She says, "Writing can be a form of therapy". Well not to me, someone who got dinged for bad handwriting all through primary school. Come to think of it, back then, schools put a lot of focus on arbitrary shit like handwriting and not eating or going to restrooms before breaks or tying your hair a certain way or not wearing watches or henna to school. Not so much about actual hygiene, healthy habits, mental health, bullying, all round development. Nah, but handwriting, you had to fix. Mine also did a funny little thing;  to get someone to improve at something, they always started out by embarrassing the shit out of the pupil. Not words of encouragement, just diminish the person to their most insecure form and ask them to build themselves up. That works, right? So I had terrible handwriting, but I also did not really (rather still don't) have my own style. I just tried to emulate whatever I saw or got influenced by and many a times, it was my parents' scribbles. Now I'm not in anyway implying they have bad handwriting, but they had very mature styles and also at 30+ yrs of age, had no need to write or practice their artwork daily. Needless to say but important to point out, they wrote super fast but not very legibly. And I emulated, because it's a lot fancier than saying copied. And my teachers, who were forced to decipher the hieroglyphics I left, thought it necessary to insult me in front of my fellow classmates by saying, I didn't write pretty and delicate like all the girls (because your gender, apparently has a huge role to play, not just in your personality but also your handwriting) but like crow feet markings in snow (they didn't find it necessary to complete the sentence and say, like the boys). Because in India, we only diminish girls, we don't really shame the other gender (notice, singular, because the story is from 1990s). So me and 5 other boys who were also chosen for illegible scribbles, but not shamed publicly unlike me, would arrive at school an hour before the rest of the folks and practice writing neatly for an hour. We were called the "bad handwriting club", because an hour of detention and rebuke wasn't enough of gash to our self-esteem. And how did they get us to improve? By writing in our own style, 5 pages or more in an hour. There weren't any critiques or guidelines. Just come, write, and go. If the teacher saw any improvement, she'd nod. If not, she'd make no remark there, but bring it up in class in passing or make you the butt of the joke and catch you completely off guard. So asking someone who has endured hours of this hogwash to use handwriting as therapy, should be punishable. Should be, it isn't, but I'm proposing it be.

She (the doctor) continues to say "You should try journalling all your thoughts and making lists for the next morning so you leave your anxiety in the book". Leave my anxiety. My anxiety, is my siamese twin. But not the one you can separate without any casualties. It's almost necessary for my routine functioning at this point. I don't know a way without. She also explained that all anxiety is not bad, there's the white angelic one which is eustress and the bad devil one which is distress. But I belong to a different school of thought, one that thinks these are not separate. You can't have the good without having some of the bad. For example, you can't have the so called health benefits of apple cider vinegar without a little bit of damage to your enamel. Similarly you can't expect your stress to make you all accountable and efficient, without doing away with some side effects like GI issues (nausea, diarrhea), impulsive or fidgety actions, etc. And these are seemingly small prices to pay for all that machine-esque labor it gets out of you in the hour of need.

"Think about it", she says. "You can try it out and see if your symptoms get better, sleep on it", she concludes. Sleep on it. Woman, you do remember how this conversation started, right?

I answered the mental health assessment questionnaire (finally, we both agreed on me doing a pen paper assessment as opposed to an interview format which was painfully awkward for both, the doc and patient), which asked me the same set of questions again and I hesitated between, "Do I just give that away?" and "Let's downplay it a little!", before finally settling on the " Ah, fuck it, here's my brain goop, bloop!" One of the questions I have to answer is "I sleep too much, don't sleep at all, wake up a lot" (yes, that's a question, can't you tell by looking at the semantics?) and the options are "never/often/many days/several days". Even if I appreciate what they were trying to do with saving space and grouping questions of the same category, this is just a Wren and Martin nightmare. It's worse than the Starbucks cup size system which only makes sense to people who're still binge watching Kardashians in 2023.

So I chose MANY DAYS, although I fully admit, it was only because MANY came before SEVERAL in the order and not because I fully understand how they're different. And she started discussing tips on having a good quality of sleep by addressing my anxiety issues. So, even as a metaphor, "sleep on it" isn't the best thing to say to someone battling insomnia. It's, how you would say, declassé (ah, french, very nice!).

As I walked back from the clinic, my ever racing brain couldn't stop fixating on journalling. It stuck. Like that weird lyric from pathan, "Esta noche la vida es completa". Gu. Absolute gu lyric. Same as the concept of journaling (I have given up on the spelling at this point).

Tell someone with high functioning hyper anxiety and depression, that struggles with starting activities knowing too well they won't complete it out of fear of failure or imperfection, to journal is like telling a fish that it won't be judged by it's ability to climb a tree but place it next to one and stare at it judgmentally as it struggles to survive outside water next to a tree and slowly dies of asphyxiation. Ok, maybe not that dramatic but you get where I'm going. Nowhere, that's right. Because I could go out there and buy a fancy leather clad notebook with matching stationery but let's be real, I'm never even going to finish writing my name because I'll be fully aware I'm staining it with my dirtbag of a penmanship.

So what do I do, I think about it, think about it until my mind decides to run wild and I officially do need to spit it out somewhere. That somewhere is this virtual journal.
So here you go, doc. Here's me trying. Maybe not the way you or those dweebs from the interwebs approve of, but this is something eh? Yeah, well, we all can't be winners can we?

Be SOOOOOOrry will ya, Rohit Shet.

Hello. A curt greeting because I'm running extra low on patience today. My bandwidth was just exhausted by what I'd like to define as an abominable excuse for art. And as you guessed it right, THAT movie is what this blog post is going to be about. Let's just jump right in, shall we (with no time to process/rethink)? The director of the subject (movie) definitely would agree with my approach as is evident from his story telling (I'll explain more as we go).

The pandemic has been hard on all. Even if you've been blessed with privileges and didn't really experience the worst (or did), it affected everyone. No exceptions. We were all affected in some way, shape, or form - Physically, mentally, emotionally. And we're just going to stray away from bringing up the need to be productive and relevant during a time that demanded mere survival from all of us, nothing more, nothing less. Just existence. Even so, even with the ridiculousness of the situation at hand and the whirlwind of scenes that we lived through, this movie Sooryavanshi (yes ladies and gents, revealing the subject of this post) just does not make any sense. And no, I don't mean logic, physics, writing, character development, plot kidhar hai? No, none of those things that you generally want out of a movie or show. Because that's not why you watch a Rohit Shetty movie. When you sign up (willingly or unwillingly because your loved ones are masochists) for a Rohit Shetty Cinematic (holds up barf) Universe a.k.a RSCU movie (queue eyeroll), you also sign an invisible contract that asks you to forget your brain at home (whatever that means, metaphorically) and you're there for "grandiose", "action", "larger than life" depictions, "entertainment" - none of which are descriptions I will use for the said movie (RSCU fans 🤮 will disagree but do you think I care?). But that's not why this movie makes no sense. It is mind-bogglingly bewildering because it is 2021 and Cinema is not a one man show. So the fact that THIS got past the several hundreds that worked on it and ended up in theaters (it got published for real, yo) is beyond me. I just cannot. I have just witnessed a shocking low (a disturbing new level) for Bollywood movies. This is coming from so(ME)one who has patiently watched movies like prem agan, Xposé (with the accent please), jaani dushman, and the likes of these - which are so bad that they're goood, so you know - that means something.

But this, what is this lousy excuse of a videographic. What do you call this bullshit (pardon my language, I meant to say absolute crass ass crap)?

So to start clean - I just FINISHED watching (I know right? New avatar unlocked - what is this renewed K we're witnessing, finishes movies and writes blogs, what's next running for president elections?Sooryavanshi. And as an audience member who painstakingly sat through the whole film (including end credits) and pays for streaming services, TV, and electricity, I have the right to express my thoughts about this piece of garbage. I do. I've earned it, watch me.

So RS is known for franchises (fair) and  wants to show heroes exist in normal / non supernatural forms (also fair), but still add his dramatic action-filled story telling flair (fair fair fair). But yo, tell a/any story then. Just have a story. Why do I feel like I watched an extended PowerPoint presentation? Even my school that had a similar theme for annual tableaus and plays about patriotism had more meat than this. Actually, that's not fair. Those tableuas were great. This is... I don't even know what this is.

This movie was intended to introduce Superhero 3 - Sooryavanshi. But you don't have to remember this or the name of the movie, because RS makes sure you walk out w it as he blasts SOOOOOORYAVANSHI (a sound effect very reminiscent of burps from an Indian uncle after a heavy dinner) every 2 secs and it's a 90+ min movie. So you do the math. If you have migraine, consider yourself warned. Also, while we're on the topic of memory, don't bother remembering anyone's names or story because you're reminded of it every time they reintroduce that character. It's like reverse-pokemon, he or the samnewala has to say this person's name out loud and some piece of backstory EVERY TIME they're reintroduced. No exceptions.

Exhibit a - Scene A begins with the introduction of Veer SOORYAVANSHI showing a quick backstory of how his parents died in a bomb blast. Cut to next scene of policemen talking about blasts where he reiterates how his parents were killed in a blast. Three scenes later he narrates how his parents were killed in a blast to a terrorist, and so on..

Also, everyone has to have a backstory - even the sidest of side characters, and atleast narrate it twice.

Exhibit b -  wife of a hawaldar whose only intent in the movie is to coax the superhero and his wife to get back together. She's introduced solely so she can guilt trip people by saying things like "why you breakup, get back no please, marriage is amazeballs". Even when her husband dies suddenly in a blast (if you're alarmed by the number of times I've said blast, you've definitely never watched a RSCU movie before where things just explode for no effing reason whatsoever) and they hold a funeral for him, instead of mourning for him or remembering him or just even focusing on him, she goes on to guilt trip the wife into returning back to Married state. The superhero's wife was just shown sitting, she didn't even go to console the widow or anything and gets schooled for no evident reason. Reminds me of:

There's an almost plot (almost because they tried coming up with the idea and gave up when it was 25% baked in their head, then used this gooey shit to make their whole movie) and no parallel lines or things you need to keep track of. Every scene will begin with a ppt of pictures explaining background and end with an action item, cut to next scene - action item executed. If this movie was on a chart, it'd be a straight effing line that just went on for longer than it's supposed to because it just has one point...(so technically it shouldn't even be a line). Also while we're at it, did we forget to grow up or are we still at an age when using homonyms in place of someone's name is actually still funny (Kide instead of Bhide, Prabhas for Abbas, etc). And if it is, you introduce a joke, crack and leave. What's with the extended cut explaining the joke? Even 5 year olds with limited cognition and vocabulary would sigh from boredom at this point!

If we forget the mediocre acting, non existent writing (character development is a concept unheard of in this universe, so let's not even go there) and lack of logic in scenes (e.g. where the hero is picking a man much bigger and heavier than himself using one hand while being suspended out of a helicopter, where he clears off an area with bomb threat only to drive the car with off the cleared area into a factory, where he has "intel" on some driver but no intel on the suspects whose pictures, addresses, everything the police has at its disposition, I could go on and on) ... even if we forget it all and only focus on what RSCU is known for, action shots and 💥 💥 cinematography (sad truth, but this is marketed as their USP), I'd like you to draw me a map of where this is seen in the movie. Like where is the action work bro? Work on your fight scenes and I don't mean make a 5 min story 90 mins long by just adding fight scenes but actually weave them into the narrative. Give it a purpose. The 30 min end crescendo scene is exactly 30 mins longer than it should be. If I'm to describe the action shots in this scene, I'd say Lackluster, drab, repetitive, filled with unnecessary sexual innuendos that are misplaced, and off timed

You've seen it all before and you've seen better ones where the scenes made sense. Now, watching it after the pandemic, after they made such a hullabaloo out of waiting until theatres open to show this crap and especially when you're more aware of your time and how you want to spend it, it baffles me people still go out and put their lives at risk to watch this shit.

There's no novelty in the movie, nothing that you'd need to click a button on Netflix for to watch, forget going to theaters for and paying Rs.100+. Even the songs are bad remasters of everything that was relevant eons ago. It's all so drab even the lead actress looks bored portraying her role and rightfully so.

Also let's get one thing straight. I'm hating on how poor the execution of it all is. Not the craft (i.e., cinema), not the inspiration that this is supposed to be based on, not the sentiment or intent that it was supposed to depict. So do not come at me and make this unnecessarily biased for no reason.

In closing I'd like to say, if you're craving an action movie that has similar sentiments, watch Khakee instead. Or rewatch Singham, Crime Patrol, or even CID, but for the love of oneself, do not fudging watch this Garbage. There's no reason your mind and internet trace should be exposed to such mediocrity.

Catching up, blogging and random musings

Hola! Long time, no write. Well, it hasn't occurred to me to write about anything in a very very long time. It's been almost one human gestation period long since I've had the urge to write about anything at all. Sometimes, I do wonder - what the f am I upto these days. But then again, I do throw some words here and there on an insta page I started to document my thoughts around my meals/cooking sessions.

Do you have that one thing that you do when your mental health is A-ok? Like if you subconsciously find yourself doing that, you make a mental note that all's good at this particular moment? I do. Yeah, I could have cut to the chase and said that, but how else do I keep you engaged/pretend to care? Jokes man, I jokes.

So if I'm making senseless videos or have an urgent feeling to write down something and it just flows, then that's how you know I'm doing ok. When I'm not doing this, there's something that's bothering me, but I may not know what that is.

I think I became THIS introspective about myself after depression him. Since then I've been (consciously or otherwise) trying to note my actions and thoughts and make sense of them. I'm not ranting, just rambling. Because today, I've told myself "I will write".

Back to that food page, I started it in the middle of the pandemic

.....*this presentation has been briefly interrupted in order to accomodate this commentary about the world*......

Oh yea, so since I last popped in here, the world decided to go completely wild and shut down. We were hit by the CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) global pandemic, which started to unfold in China in 2019 and brought them to a complete standstill and right when the world was about to move on from the news and dismiss this just like the SARS/Ebola scares, it spread its venom across asia, europe and the Americas and just forced all borders to shut down, brought governments and people to a shocking halt, forced our "ever so social" race to go on a social distancing and masking whirlwind and to learn to build a new way of life. Though not a single soul would wish a pandemic or epidemic or any sickness on anybody, but it did come in the day and age of technology and so it allowed a lot of functions to still go on and about their work, trying to sustain the rest which unfortunately could not function without physical presence. The world also turned to the field of medicine - health (physical and mental) got its moment in the sun, a hot second of limelight,  up until vaccination drives started and people started developing more confidence in these and almost going back to the normal that existed Before Corona (BC).

In these moments of complete lockdown, the antisocial keeda in me THRIVED! I made so many videos, tried my hand at various hobbies and skills, developed a love for the art of cooking, and when it felt right, just randomly started an IG page (Instagram, get with it) to document what I was cooking/eating. But the purpose of the page was to microblog. To write random thoughts about that meal or some component in it or that moment. Because I still could not get myself to write a whole-ass blogpost, but also wasn't adept at expressing myself in the 2*2 space that twitter provides.

If you ever discover it (I'm not linking it here), let me just tell you - it's not sequential. I don't document what I'm eating at that moment. The intent is to just post about something that feels right at that moment (could be that very meal or a meal from 4 years ago) and just write. You could extrapolate a bit and say that's my way of journaling. I like to go back to it sometimes and see what I wrote in the spur of the moment, what thoughts I had about that post during that time frame and frame of mind, and that is also another form of introspection.

Yep, that's all. I basically made you (assuming there's anyone but me here) read 6-8 paras about absolutely nothing.

Ookay, bye now. 💜

Breathe

There's a light
At the end of the dark tunnel,
But you keep focusing on
Disarray and muddles.

Count your blessings
not your problems, they say.
But what about the times,
when a problem's all up in your space?

What about the days,
when a nugatory thought weighs you down?
When you are clouded by issues,
that make you sigh and frown!

When you can't seem to shake
that pessimism, out of your head.
When you've so much to do,
but can't get out of bed...

The monsters in your mind,
get exponentially piercing!
Your ruminations and beliefs,
get increasingly self-menacing.

The stormy winds of depression,
oh, how will you bear...
When life seems worthless
in this bottomless state of despair.

Pause, hold up;
Take a step back or two.
Exist, barely, merely,
Yes, that'd be a major coup

To the present, to this very moment,
Pay heed
This too shall pass;
Until then, just breathe.

Cool parents

Hi! Howdy!

Long time since I wrote something that's not job related or for obtaining/procuring a job (Sad). I've recently been binging on Netflix original rom-coms (NORC) because 'Hellllooo good production quality!' and because they're so light, just like instant noodles.

This Wednesday, I hopped into an Uber and my driver and I had this instant connection. This ex-writer is now a publisher by day and a ubdriver by night! She has published some really hardcore books, met then-amateur-now-bestselling authors and graphic designers. She asked me if I write and I had this dire urge to say, "Yes, love letters to Reg-agencies!" to put it easily for people who don't get what I do for a living, but I didn't. Because sometimes you don't want to give away too much (especially facts like you're a big weirdo) in the very first conversation (besides the point because I wasn't day dreaming of becoming besties with her). When the 15-minute (yeah, I know, seemed much longer from ☝️, didn't it?) ride was about to end, she told me something I had recently heard about in a movie called "Set it Up". She said you're always harsher on your own writing than the audience and the first drafts are always the suckiest. That's why you have editors and publishers like me *wink*! Which is how I got to writing this post.

So much for a build-up. Yikes.

So I'm sick today (uhgain) and I'm watching another NORC (yet again) as I eat my dal-khichdi (predictable much?), called Public School. It's about this kid whose mom homeschools him and as he goes in for a GED examination that he's about to double-ace, he sees this incredibly gorgeous girl and fails on purpose to get to do a few months of public-school, make friends and experience it all before Cambridge. His mom wants to protect him because of her past experiences and how she ended up getting pregnant in highschool. What's extremely fascinating about this story is the connection between the son and mom who've grown up in their respective roles (of being son and mom) over the past 15 years, how the independence affects their relationship and how the mother introduces social concepts to her son in a really cool manner or as she puts it "in a safe environment".

I love the movie, because of this relationship. Because it reminds me of how my parents grew with me.

When you're a kid/teen, you want to rebel and do all the things the cool kids do. The middle/highschool period is harsh on every kid. Peer pressure is at its peak, you are being introduced to novel concepts like attraction, infatuation, love, intoxication, lust. You're not sure who can solve these mysteries for you so you end up talking to your peers, who are equally clueless and whose knowledge comes from sources that require secrecy and incognito tabs.

While all this is happening in our lives, our parents who are parents for the first-time (because each kid is different and also because there is a huge learning curve with kid #1) can see this background story building up but don't really know how to approach it. The only things that they are certain about is protecting you from hurt (physical, mental and emotional) or from having negative experiences they've had.

So there's this instant battle between rebelling teenagers full of hormones and adrenaline, dying to experience it all and make their own memories and lessons AND parents who want to help/protect but don't know the best way around it so they end up grounding/reprimanding their kids. This creates a rift and slowly reduces their proximity to each other. And as we all know, when there is a gap between something, it creates room for something else, it being doubt, sadness, negativity, anger in this case.

What we also forget is when we quote cool stories, like I finally got my parents to understand this or that, we take it as a personal win. But don't stop to realize the growth trajectory our parents have accomplished. They never get kudos for it.

As a side-note, we had an HR based training that spoke about culture of accountability, this Wednesday (yup, this Wednesday was really packed with growth vitamins for my brain). One of the takeaways was spot-recognition. When you see someone go above and beyond and really help accomplish something huge, you take a moment and celebrate them! And while we put such wonderful concepts to use in our work-life, we often forget to apply these to life in general and celebrate the gifts we fondly refer to as parents!

Here are some instances when I forgot to celebrate you, ma and pa!

1.  I always brag about how being a biology student helped opened doors of free communication between us. I haven't ever stopped to realize how you both encouraged me to and never asked me to STFU. How there was always open communication about everything. There was obviously SOME shyness during the initial years but look how we all grew! How you would point us to right sources and how questions were entertained, even if some of them weren't directly answered.
2. How there were never shows we couldn't watch together as a family or talk about
3. How you were always aware of the company I kept but never forced your opinion/ decisions on me
4. While you two dropped me off everywhere, walked me to school/college during every exam and waited till it ended, you two put a rock over your heart (dil pe patthar 😋) and sent your only child across the 7 oceans/seas.
5. My entire debacle with depression and how you grew to accept it and approach it in the right way.

There are so many instances and I cannot possibly list each and every one (for obvious reasons of limited content exposure to my audience which is most likely only going to be the two of you), and I'm sorry that I never spot recognized it. But I'm eternally grateful.

Watching this movie brings back all those moments we spent growing as a family. I love you two.

As I close this very weirdly written, zero proof-read article, I leave you with a slightly word-smithed dialogue from this movie. "Why is it weird to say my parents are cool and my parents are my best friends! Well I think my parents are cool. We should be able to say this!"

2018 updates

Hi All

Who am I talking to? Me from the future or You - whoever you are, if you are even there 😅. I know it's been months or probably over a year since I posted.

All this while, I've had this urge to post every single day. Truly, I did. It's just that whenever I would start, I'd either get into branched topics and then leave the main topic altogether, while wondering about a topic that's not even remotely related as it would seem to the reader or I would just have horrific memories or doubts about the topic and the urge to write would die pretty quickly.

Yeniway! I've been meaning to share more about what's been up, what all has happened and what's the purpose of life as I see it (no not really,  this has never honestly crossed my mind).

Hope I can honestly get to it and start yapping away like I used to.

Keeping it short, testing if I still gots this,

Maybe I don't, maybe I do...

We'll see,

Some random poems. Ep 1: Opposites

Hey, almost a year han!
Outdoing myself with every post on how late the next one can go.

Yeniwayyy, so there was a phase when I was trying my hand at poetry as a 16yr old. I'm not that good at it as you shall see; my work is almost as average as my writing.

But recently, I have been re-reading those and have had this sudden urge to share to give you an insight of how my braim functions.

So without further blehblehbleeeah,

Opposites<3

Have you ever stopped to wonder
What she holds in her deep blue eyes
Her true emotions
Under her thick rimmed spectacles she hides

She finds a way to run
At the mention of his name
Because the buzz it would create!
She wouldn't be able to handle her shot to fame!

She looks calm
Just like a stangnant lake
But the tingles and butterflies of her first ever crush
Is too much for her to take

This swan pretends to be a duckling
So she can elope
And her self esteem is so low
She doesn't even want to have a tinge of hope!

She thinks he's out of her league
But barely does she know
He might be the star jock
But his true feelings, he too doesn't show

And every once in a boring class
He buries his face under a book
And when he finds her lookin the other way
He cranes his neck, just to steal a look!

He' s worried about rejection
He is confident she'll say No
He thinks she's way out of his league
But barely does he know! :-*

Insecurities

I want to apologize for not having posted since a really long time (which did not affect anyone, just getting it out of the system).

The thing is that I've been wanting to write since a year but I can't. I won't call it a writer's block because I am not a writer. I am also not short of content since my writer app tells a different tale. It is filled with more than 20 unfinished posts just lying there waiting to be completed. It's just that the urge, within me, to complete an article has sort of died.

If I haven't mentioned before, I got into severe depression almost a year ago. The harsh reality of my dreams struck me and let me incapacitated to the point of not being able to function. In the sense that, I would cry almost every minute for every little thing I'd notice or feel and it got to a point where I needed to seek help. I sought professional relief and though it didn't do much but just being able to get things out of my mind, slowly, enabled me to come to point where the crying reduced.

I feel pretty vulnerable right now putting up something that's so private but it's what I feel so strongly about at this very hour, this very minute and hence the words are flowing without any creative hindrance.

I was lucky enough to come back home for summer and bury my head, my fears and qualms in the protective and assuring hugs of my family.

My mind looks at my past dreamland like it's the kingdom of doom and darkness and manages to produce phobia and panic at just the mention of the fact that in a few days, my three month long escapade would come to an end and life would slap me hard with the bitter truth that I am not strong enough to face, for now (maybe forever).

I want to cry while I yell my lungs out and beg to not go away. I don't want to leave the familiarity that I've grown in since the time I started comprehending things. I don't want to make solitude my best friend again. I don't want to cry to the point of exhaustion, to the point where my family's pity turns into vexation.

I am reading a novel where the protagonist leaves to go to college and has a lot of internal conflicts going on. I didn't know the story would develop in such a relatable way as the description was pretty concise and evasive. However with each passing chapter, I notice the protagonist trying to follow the principles of mindfulness, of fully being in the moment and living it completely even though her head is clouded with several tangential issues.

That's the thing about preparing to go away.  You start becoming aware of each of the little things that you once took for granted, that didn't matter to you, but were, in reality, a privilege. And with that realization, you want to immerse yourself fully into the moment and try to live it completely. But you can't because your mind and heart keep pulling you off in different directions, taking you away from the moment and pushing you into the unchangeable past or unforeseeable future.

And with that self authored quote, I end this rather confusing post.

When you prove your education was worthless and you are as illiterate AF!

Ok so I have an exam and I’m already halfway through one more blog post that I was supposed to post a week ago but I haven’t completed. There’s this issue that has happened that is eating my brain cells slowly one at a time so I thought what better way to get it out of the system than to write it down. So here goes something.

There’s this guy in my class and although I see him as a potential good friend because we come from the same undergraduate background and have gone through some crazy shitty subjects and curriculum together and are equally homesick, but there’s something he said that is driving me nuts and I’m going to pour it out.

Background: I’m pursuing higher education/Masters and am terribly homesick to the extent that saying any word and I kid you not, any word, will trigger the subconscious portion of my brain which will with its unique talents and creative imagination abilities link it somehow to my home, to my country and enable me to cry at the drop of a hat!

So this guy and I are having a deep conversation about how we’ve gone from humans to a bag of popcorn that has been kept in the microwave way past the warning time so it can “BURST” anytime and then he says, you can complete your education and head back immediately to which I reply I’ve a loan to pay off. So he says, you can get married and then your husband can take care of the loan. You’re a girl, what tension do you have? It’s not like you’ve to look after your family. And I’m saying this again, I see a potential friend in him but never in my life have I been so enraged by/at someone that the thought of using a pen to slit their throats has appealed to me more than the appeal generated by an Oscar to Leo De Caprio!  So I said, uhm yeah I do! I’m the only child, I do have to pay off the loan and also look after them. To which the sexist F%@#^* replies, your husband will do that. You girls have no tension, get married and cook. Everything is done for you. We earn, we take care of our parents and yours, we take care of you and the kids! I took a minute to calm the part of my mind that has been trained by Game of Thrones and said, do two things ASAP. ONE, BREAK UP WITH YOUR GIRLFRIEND AND TWO, NEVER EVER REPRODUCE!

I’m ashamed that the boy is from my city, a city that’s the most “modern” part of my country. I’m ashamed that he belongs to my generation and that he has the privilege of pursuing masters in the land of freedom, the land where sexism and racism are issues that are taken very seriously, a land where people are broad minded and welcome people who function on similar lines! I mean WTF bro! Seriously!

I’m going to be very harsh and judge your parents for the obvious failure in upbringing! Because what have you done to deserve any sympathy from my side! If our generation has people that think like this, girls we’re doomed! We’re screwed! Say goodbye to the dreams of living in a free country because even if you think…ooh the orthodox Khauuup buddhes are going to die soon so hellloo freedom, then guess what, spoiler alert, there are mini khaupsies in our gen too, which upsets me to no end!

When people do this, discriminate on lines of religion, sex, caste, subcaste or whatever is subordinate to any of these categories….when people in general discriminate and they are those lucky few who’ve had the privilege of being literate/ educated, I lose faith in education! Education fails on you asssholes! You are a disgrace and you’ve failed yourself, your parents, your teachers and your entire generation! I know I’m going to repent saying this, but such people shouldn’t be allowed to procreate. We don’t want prototypes of these in an already screwed up society!
I’m sorry Ma and Pa , I was going to give up and prove these people right! Never now, never again!

I’ll be back with another post which will definitely be a lot lighter on the brain. Sorry but I’m not apologetic about this post!

Poem #3 - The Indian Woman's song

OK this was a poem that I wrote in the heat of the moment...a lot was happening in my country and in the media w.r.to rape, molestation, crimes on women in general and there were people that would just say shit in front of the cameras and recorders to get their moment of fame and youngsters would either go completely berserk over what was said and revolt on Twitter, Facebook or any other social media or those that we fondly refer to as moti buddhi wala insan or basically retarded would get some inspiration from the crap these public figures would say and start their own anti woman campaigns.

As a teen (I was when i wrote this) who didn't read newspapers but had to because social media was brimming with it, I was red with rage on how the victims were either being blamed or completely ignored in this havoc.

I wrote it with an innocent mind and very limited vocabulary as would be evident when and if you go through it, but my father just edited it . It still is very kiddish but I'm going to post it so suck it! :P

P.S: Daddy ....Thank you and love you lots!

The Indian woman's song: Sept 2013

Today I sing an untold song
Of heinous crimes committed since a time long.
And I know you are too bored to bother
But I scribble as humans push humanity off the border.

I stand at the station waiting for the train
Hoping and praying that it doesn't rain
I try to plan the rest of the day
So I can ease out of it in a comfortable way

As I wait I see a group of boys,
Looking at us girls like we are the shiny new toys
Hissing and laughing and passing comments lewd
Though fully clothed in their eyes we are nude.

Some of them bumping into us for fun
For Molesting girls they're always on the run.
And I want to protest and shout so that people hear
I keep shut as their mentality I fear.

In a country where rape is ok
The men are free to do anything, I say
Kill a few people, crush their dreams

Like life is dirt or so it seems

If a girl says no, she means yes.
Because she doesn’t have any right to say otherwise
And if you can't get her to yield, you just can rape her, kill her, And do it in ways ugly and blatant.

It's a man's world after all
Where women are objects of desire
It's a world where she is denied respect and rights...
And now she is tired of getting into fights.

Blame them all, blame as much as you want,
Western culture, clothes, movie influence and rap songs
Even the three year old was at fault
The one that faced the brutal assault
She was using her father's mobile
She was giving signals!?
That innocent juvenile...

Go see a few pictures on the effect of the nuclear bombs
On Japan's parts, till you feel you've wronged.
Trust man to convert something useful into a device to kill
Humans - depriving nature of its balance intricate and atmosphere tranquil.

So Ladies please carry your pepper spray,
Again it's up to us to be careful they say
Their crooked ways they aren't going to mend
Until a few of them, to hell, we send.

I say take charge and kill a few
Just to start ending our curfew
Your body, your life, you call the shots
Wear what you please, jeans or shorts

Our constitution grants all the freedom we desire,
Let's all ignite our inner fire
Let us all stand united against this unpardonable sin,
It's our battle and it's time for us to win.

A piece of me - #1- a peak into my anxious mind

Q.50. Psychological health has an effect on the physical health of a person.
  1. Strongly agree
  2. Maybe
  3. Strongly disagree

A
Choosing the answer didn’t take me more than a millisecond. This was probably one of the questions that I really felt so strongly about out of all the 181 questions on a psychometric test I had to answer for a scholarship interview.

Anxiety is a topic that is close to my heart. For most, it is not even an issue. It’s something they dismiss as irrational fear and this dismissal not only pisses off the anxious, but also weakens them psychologically because the people they feel they can rely on, choose to completely ignore them. Panic attacks are a real thing. Anxiety is a psychological disorder. I suffer from hyper anxiety disorder. And it isn’t something I can just control or not think off to make it go away.

When people are nervous, they shiver or sweat. When we have anxiety attacks, we hyperventilate; suffer from palpitations, shortness of breath, puke incessantly and have explosive diarrhea when we’ve been on nothing but healthy home cooked meals for days or worse on nothing. No amount of pills stops any of this and the effect of it does not just stop when the event is over, it goes on for quite some more time. Our reactions during that event which has caused such an attack will play in our minds till the time we can stop remembering it or there is some event which manages to override its effect, else it plays on like a cassette and whether you want it to stop or not, you’ve no choice but to give in to the play-rewind-repeat. It’s terrible.

I guess they started after the year where I was bullied by people who I considered best friends; I went into depression, caught dengue and on the journey to recovery, I cried everyday because I thought this was the end, that even if I made it I would have no friends. And as dramatic as all this sounds, for a teenager they are somewhat important “life changing” moments. I did recover and I made new friends during every new step, but I’ve grown so cautious that there is hardly any trust that remains in me.

This is a very boring topic for my blog, a blog I’ve decided to reactivate with some new posts after a long time, but yesterday I realized a few things that made me really want to write about this and as you know Appiqué writes whatever shit she feels mostly strongly about, be it worst hashtags or a mouth full of braces.

This topic has nothing to do with anxiety or bullying directly.  It’s mostly to do with how these led me to becoming an insecure person (though I don’t really give away the impression of being one): how I invest all my time and effort in one person and give them all the power to have an effect on me. At every stage of the relatively short life I’ve lived to date, I’ve tried to not but found myself getting dependent on an individual very heavily; I will invest all my energy in him/her till I come to a point of realization that he/she has his/her own life with its own set of priorities; that they cannot always be there to feed my insecurities and apprehensions.

I am writing this because writing lets me understand what I am really and truly feeling on the inside.  I guess one can’t always be there to simmer one’s fire of insecurity  and anxiety, but the one’s that remain and give us constant reassurance without losing hope in us and still loving us as much, Thank You!

I will hopefully get back to writing something borderline decent. I truly want to be apologetic for such a sad post but I am not. Thanks for reading if you did. I would just love you as much if you didn’t. J

Surprise #1

Okay I said surprise so here I go with my first one:

Needless to say this would have been never ending but this is a short but heartfelt testimonial (like the orkut days) for my two BEST friends!

I love you both.

Hope I don’t get killed after this!

Okay I am starting….

Shhhhhhhh…

In a world where everything neeeeeeds to go on social media, where friendship is calibrated in terms of the fancy places people go to or the clothes and brands you wear, I found two people that go beyond the superficial, the fake, the temporary realms of a relation- two people that are literally the spelling of friendship for me!

Let’s deal with them separately and then club them!

Listing according to the chronological order of appearance in my life:

RUCHI MANGLUNIA/ PINTEREST CELEB/ RUCHAN/ RUCHANDAS MANGALDAS LUMIA/ PUCHKANDAS

This female was literally, not kidding, the first person I spoke to in college. We met on the day when college was displaying a list of ranks according to CET scores and people could calculate the probability of them getting in. This extremely nerd chick with a cute mommy was sitting all uptight and quiet and trying to appear all self absorbed. Her mother was so much more accommodating than her. Our mothers got all chatty while discussing our future aspects while leaving a very quiet introvert chick with marks that spoke for her and a hyper anxious nerve wreck to sit and drown in the silence that ensued.

I swear I never ever dreamt of us becoming bffs that day! Till date I must have told you a thousand times that I thought you hated me the day we met. That gives you a clear idea of how low I am on self confidence.

We luckily got into the same college and met a couple of times but our meetings were just very cordial exchange of nods and greetings.

Second semester began and we met again. She was one of the only two acquaintances I had in this new girly class. And we stuck.

As people who think alike and have the same morals, people who will speak up and stand up for what they like or dislike, I found a bestie, a forever wali friend.

She will tell you about the fights we’ve had or just mere arguments- happens when you keep a stubborn Taurean and a hardheaded scorpion in d same room. But we’ve stuck because we know that above all this is how we feel for each other (#ThemFeels #SoEmotionsMuchWow). And she’s cried :D! And I’ve cried: D ok not infront of her but let’s save my waterworks for the future.

She is my crazy arts freak. She is literally the person people run to when in a creative puddle.
She is my elephant ear. She is always there to listen and just be there, whenever I call or cry and ask her to meet.
She is the first person I confide in about everything and anything.
She is my chef and oh boy, is it frustrating because you can’t have food till she decorates :/ and sometimes it’s so pretty that you are literally in a dilemma – to eat and destroy or to die out of starvation
She is a makeup guru, a walk buddy and hugger and so much!

Two of my most memorable times with you:
You remember we went walking before the annual IIM trip in 2014 and I just poured out like a thaili with holes…it was such short notice and there you were outside dominoes. We must have walked for an hour or two but I felt so light after that like a heavy load had been heaved off my brain. These sessions with you whether they are in my colony or yours or our houses or at oberoi are what make me love you so much. We can look like shit and not give a shit about it! What’s important for us is that our friend has been there for us and we need to be there for her.

The second is a recent one- you cried. I’ll tell you why. To me, you are a very strong person and you’ve got it all sorted and organized –your work, your relations, etc. what we fought over was so trivial- trifle if I may :P… but in the end you said, I am so scared of arguments and I thought I’d lose you L… oh babydoll, you can’t lose me! I’m even more persistent than the phlegm one has during bronchitis.

Apart from these, the countless dress-ups, hairdos, just lying on the bed like walruses, the car trips and the auto trips, your tiffin <3 time, movie and sitcom dates :D
And now enough of you, so get out!

KOMAL/ CHOTU CHUBBY CHEEK/ STUD MUFFIN/ KOMA/ IEEE QUEEN
This girl is literally the cutest voice you will hear. Not exaggerating at all…

She is a bulk of optimism mixed with tones of honesty. She has a halo, literally!

I met her in the second semester on the very first day. Just like me, she wasn’t going out of her way to make friends or socialize at the same time she kept an open demeanor for people who would approach her. Her first impression on me was fun and down to earth. And four years down, it remains the same! She is super fun and she is warm, welcoming, accommodating, kind and lovable!

She is like a bowl of hot chicken soup and a soft blanket- she’s love- the purest definition.

Again I am going to say, I never thought we’ll stick but we did. And though I don’t meet her that often, we are always connected because I know this sounds Disney-ish and these are her lines but I agree with them 100%, we always remember to remember each other in our joys and stick around during our lows.

There came a moment when koma shut herself and ruchi was afraid, but I never was/am afraid of losing her, I have this faith that we’ll stick, because I trust her beyond limits. Ruchi is sometimes our middle person because she meets us often and we get a little sad that we don’t find out about each other directly but we’re much beyond that. We know we’ll be there when the time comes. :*
I relate to her more than I relate to Ruchi because some aspects of our personality match- ambiverts, again morals, our tastes, etc

She is my warm woolen blanket- her hugs are like the bed after a massive pillow fight- full of soft cotton!
She is the neatest person when it comes to craft- her straight lines would put any artist to shame
She is the magical secret closet of the best traditional outfits ever!
She is the dose of positivity one needs after loathing in self depreciating thoughts!

The most heartfelt instance with her was her pouring out on phone- it’s when the person who’s always been there for you like a wall like a pillar shows you that they too have their moments, when you get to return their favor of being a shoulder :* of being there.

The other is you being with my mum the entire evening, my mum can’t stop talking about you kom! She’s in love with you :***. I know for a fact that in you, I have found my BFF and that I’m treasuring you for life.

I don’t want people that’ll teach me to look sexy or ones that will propel me to the top of the popular clan, people that’ll show me how to party or booze or “live life”. I just want people who’ll be there, come what may- as a support when I am at my weakest, as a backing agent when I am right but I’ve little courage to go on, as a slapping agent :P when I am wrong! I want love, I want honesty and I want the ability to stick around. These things are for free and they don’t cost people when it comes to giving or receiving. In return I promise to return all these :*

I have so many memories of us, but the ones I’ve mentioned are the best and most treasured!

I love you both. I don’t need to say it but I am just clarifying (for ruchi, esp) you can’t get rid of the super secret gang!

Once you’re in, you’re in for life.
